Umbrija ir jos grožis

Svarbu orientacijai

Jeigu tikrai nori atvykti traukiniu

MONTE TEZIO

Monte Tezio is the mountain you can see right across from Luca’s house, and was for years his breakfast view. At just under 1,000 metres, it is an accessible and rewarding hike with panoramic views over the valleys, Perugia, and Lago Trasimeno.

Monte Tezio is the mountain facing Luca's house, the one he looked at every morning growing up. At just under 1,000 metres, it is accessible to most, and the views from the top are genuinely beautiful: the surrounding valleys, the city of Perugia in the distance, and the shimmering surface of Lago Trasimeno.

We suggest parking here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/wkRFHBaqG3c7apqa7

From Umbertide around 30 minutes drive (22 km)

From there, follow one of the marked trails listed here: https://www.montideltezio.it/sentieri/

We suggest going for the Croce di Monte Tezio (https://maps.app.goo.gl/bjMEE8xPuicXcPkr8) and have a short visit to the Rifugio della Tenuta di Murlo (https://maps.app.goo.gl/hBhN8Nn189snqQD86)

MONTE CUCCO

Monte Cucco sits at around 1,600 metres and offers one of the most beautiful hiking experiences in the area. One of the highlights is coming across a rarity these days, wild horses roaming freely on the mountain.

Monte Cucco is a step up in terms of challenge and altitude, sitting at around 1,600 metres. We have a beautiful memory of hiking and camping here with our favourite friend and guide, Came. One way or another, you will likely experience one of his epic tours during your time here.

We parked at Pian delle Macinare and followed the trekking route up to the peak and back. You can use the first part of this route as reference: https://www.alltrails.com/it-it/sentiero/italy/umbria/anello-monte-cucco

If you are feeling adventurous and energised, of course feel free to complete the entire ring route.

Natural water spots

CASCATELLE DI MONTELOVESCO

Barely known even by locals, the Cascatelle di Montelovesco (little waterfalls of Montelovesco) are a hidden gem. Cold, clear water, tiny fish, and a forest walk to get there. Not the most comfortable spot, but very much rewarding and astonishing.

This one requires a bit more effort than the Vasconi, but if it appeals to you, it is truly special. Barely known by locals, the Cascatelle di Montelovesco are a series of small waterfalls with cold, refreshing water, exactly what you need on a boiling hot summer day.

Getting there: part of the road is a dirt track, but it is manageable with any car, just remember to drive carefully as they are potholes along the track. Head to this point and park as indicated: https://maps.app.goo.gl/ft5oHHZMqAJhrXRT6

From Umbertide around 20 minutes drive (16 km)

From there, follow the sketches provided (see images below) to reach the waterfalls. The walk takes you through a short stretch of forest and then along the river, through the water too, so be prepared to get your feet wet.

What to expect:

  • The first waterfall has a narrow basin with clear water and small fish. You can jump in from above if you are feeling bold.
  • The second has a larger natural pool and more space to hang around.

What to bring: closed shoes or water shoes with good grip are essential. Bring water and energy, particularly in hot hours this hike can be somewhat challenging. You will briefly pass through someone's property on the way, this is well established and received by the owners, so no need to worry.

A word of warning: space around the water basins is limited, so do not expect sun loungers and beach towels. What you will find instead is silence, cold water, and a sense that you have discovered something very few people know about. If that sounds like your idea of a perfect afternoon, this is your spot.

(Note that the waterfall in the pictures, is the second one)

VASCONI

The Vasconi, literally “large basins”, are natural rock pools carved by the river. More accessible than the Cascatelle, with a bit more space to spread out. Cold water, total silence, and zero fuss.

The Vasconi (large basins) are natural rock pools formed by the river, easier to reach than the Cascatelle and with a bit more room to relax around them, though comfort is still not really the point here. What you will find is exactly what the name suggests: cold, clear water in naturally carved basins, surrounded by silence and serenity.

Getting there is straightforward, yet again it is only accessible through a dirt road (which should be in quite fine conditions as it has been remade soon). Drive carefully here to! If you are looking for a calm, quiet place in nature to cool down from the heat or simply take a breath from all the socialising, the Vasconi deliver. You can park right next to the pools where the road widens (see image below for exact spot): https://maps.app.goo.gl/vuXdy5BvmbMYAS6u6

From Umbertide around 38 minutes drive (36 km)

MOLE DI NARNI

The most accessible of the three, just drive up and park right in front. The downside of easy access is the chance of finding many people there. If possible go off peak hours to avoid chaos. The Mills of Narni Lake is well known and a bit further away than the others, but beautiful and effortless. A great option if you want nature without the adventure.

The Mole di Narni is the most straightforward of the natural water spots on this list, no dirt roads, no forest walks, no property to sneak through. Simply drive up, park directly in front, and you are there.

It is the furthest away by drive and the most well known of the three, but that should not put you off , it is genuinely beautiful and a very easy day out.

Lakes and beaches

LAGO TRASIMENO

The largest lake in central Italy, and one of the most beautiful. Visit a car-free island by ferry, watch the sunset over the water with an aperitivo in hand, or sit down for dinner with a view and a host you will never forget. From Umbertide it is around 45 minutes drive depending on the location you want to reach.

Lago Trasimeno is the largest lake in central Italy and one of the defining landscapes of Umbria. It is visible from the top of Monte Tezio, and well worth a proper visit. rom Umbertide it is circa a 45 minutes drive depending on the location you want to reach. Here is what we recommend:

Isola Polvese - Take the ferry to the largest island on the lake, completely car-free, and walk around it at your own pace. Peaceful, beautiful, and unlike anything else in the area. https://maps.app.goo.gl/spWGyRcYKBsJFHVk8

Torta al testo - A local Umbrian flatbread, best tried at Faliero Torta d'la Maria. Simple and delicious, and close to the ferry to Isola Polvese. https://maps.app.goo.gl/mz8jkqBvkbtEpnw2A

Rocca del Leone - The castle above Castiglione del Lago is one of the most striking landmarks around the lake. Worth a stop. https://maps.app.goo.gl/8wF1KjEDZ1qMhYeL7

Aperitivo with a view — Two great spots:

Dinner with a view - Osteria Rosso di Sera has a beautiful setting and an incredibly entertaining host. https://maps.app.goo.gl/ETToofvGWPFgEiLj6

LAGO DI FIASTRA

A mountain lake with striking turquoise water, sandy beaches, and one of the most dramatic short hikes in the region, the Lame Rosse, a landscape of red rock pinnacles unlike anything else in central Italy. From Umbertide it is around a 1 hour and 30 minutes drive (110 km)

Lago di Fiastra sits higher up in the Sibillini mountains and has a completely different character to Trasimeno, wilder, more remote, and surrounded by mountains. The water is a striking shade of turquoise and the shoreline has several beaches where you can simply lay in the sun. From Umbertide it is around a 1 hour and 30 minutes drive (110 km)

If you want to add a hike to the day, the Lame Rosse, a surreal landscape of eroded red rock pinnacles rising above the lake, is short, dramatic, and absolutely worth it.

CALA DEL GESSO — ARGENTARIO

A piece of Sardinia in Tuscany. Cala Gesso sits inside the Argentario natural park, turquoise water, white rocks, and a drive that passes through some unexpected gems along the way.

Umbria is landlocked, so the coast requires a commitment, but if you feel you cannot spend a week in Italy without seeing the sea, this is the one to go for. Cala Gesso, in the Argentario natural park on the Tuscan coast, has the kind of water you expect from Sardinia, not the mainland (https://maps.app.goo.gl/BGRn1u19JHJTEjkBA).

From Umbertide circa 3 hours drive (240 km)

The drive there is also worth planning around. Two stops we recommend along the way:

Tarot Garden (Giardino dei Tarocchi) — The monumental sculpture garden of artist Niki de Saint Phalle. Bizarre, colourful, and completely unexpected in the middle of the Tuscan countryside. https://maps.app.goo.gl/ueuqX8sC4a48nwFg8

Civita di Bagnoregio — A medieval town perched on a crumbling tufa rock, accessible only by a narrow footbridge. One of the most peculiar and beautiful places in central Italy. https://maps.app.goo.gl/PjR8arG9PTrUEoC78

From Umbertide circa a 1 hour and 30 minutes drive (110 km)

MONTE CONERO RIVIERA

On the opposite side of the boot — the Adriatic coast. The Conero area is one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in central Italy, with dramatic white cliffs dropping into clear blue water.

If Cala Gesso is the Tyrrhenian option, the Conero Riviera is its Adriatic counterpart — completely different in character but equally stunning. The coastline here is defined by dramatic white limestone cliffs, and the beaches sit below them in small sheltered coves.

Two beaches to aim for:

You can park at https://maps.app.goo.gl/5cVbPWuaubuvAxPD9

From Umbertide circa 2 hours drive (169 km)

Spiaggia dei Gabbiani — More accessible and with more facilities, but still beautiful. A good base for exploring the coastline. https://maps.app.goo.gl/mj4WLoEwCcyGHQVP9

Spiaggia delle Due Sorelle — One of the most iconic beaches on the Adriatic, accessible only by boat or a steep hike. Named after two limestone sea stacks rising from the water. Book a boat from Sirolo or Numana to get there. https://maps.app.goo.gl/GBrkkyb5BndAwSp26
